Staying Safe When Working Out in the Heat

As climate change pushes entire swaths of the U.S. to experience record-breaking levels of heat, it’s important to have a plan for staying safe while working out.


Here are some tips to stay safe while working out in the Heat:


  1. Exercise in the morning before the heat of the day.
  2. Wear sweat-wicking clothing, which will help to keep the skin cool.
  3. Wear a hat to shade your head.
  4. Hydrate with plain water at least 30 minutes prior to exercise, during exercise, and after exercise.
  5. Change your fitness routine to include activities that do not put as much heat-stress on the body, such as swimming, yoga, and tai chi/martial arts.
